By Hanson Tjung The Law of Gravity which revolutionized the Astronomy study were discovered by Sir Isaac Newton who introduced the law to the scientific world in the 1600s. However, if it were not for Edmond Halley, perhaps only a glimpse of people who knew about Newton’s thoughts.
Halley was channeling Newton’s ideas. He questioned some of Newton’s assumptions. He corrected Newton’s mathematical calculations if they were wrong. He even designed a variety of geometric diagrams to support the work of Newton.
Halley was the first person who convinced Newton when Newton was hesitated to publish his ideas. Halley, then, edited and monitored the publication. Halley even bore the cost of the publication of Newton’s Principia Mathematica Philosophiae Naturalis which made Newton one of the most respected thinker in history.
Halley understand the difference between self-promotion and selfless-promotion. For him, to help Newton so that Newton’s ideas became well-known was more important than getting a personal recognition for helping Newton. He knew how important those ideas were and wanted to announce them to the world.
Self-promotion said, “If we do not honk our own trumpet, there will be no one who rings it for us.”
Selfless-promotion said, “I just want to help my team to make a beautiful song.”
Hukum Gravitasi yang merevolusionerkan studi astoronomi ditemukan oleh Sir Isaac Newton yang memperkenalkan hukum tersebut ke dunia ilmiah pada 1600-an. Namun, jika bukan karena Edmond Halley, mungkin hanya segelintir orang yang mengetahui tentang pemikiran-pemikiran Newton.
Halley adalah penyalur gagasan-gagasan Newton. Ia mempertanyakan berbagai asumsi Newton. Ia mengoreksi perhitungan matematis Newton jika keliru. Ia bahkan merancang berbagai diagram geometrik untuk mendukung karya Newton.
Halley-lah yang pertama kali meyakinkan Newton yang ragu untuk mempublikasikan ide-idenya. Kemudian Halley menyunting dan mengawasi penerbitannya. Halley bahkan menanggung biaya penerbitan hasil karya Newton, Mathematic Principles of Natural Philosophy, yang menjadikan Newton salah seorang pemikir yang paling terpandang dalam sejarah.
Halley mengerti perbedaan antara prmosi diri dan promosi yang tidak mementingkan diri sendiri. Baginya, membantu Newton supaya ide-ide Newton tersebar merupakan hal yang lebih penting daripada mendapat pengakuan pribadi karena telah membantu Newton. Ia tahu betapa pentingnya ide-ide tersebut dan ingin mengumumkannya kepada dunia.
Promosi diri menyebutkan, “Jika kita tidak membunyikan terompet kita sendiri, tidak akan ada seorang pun yang membunyikannya untuk kita.”
Promosi yang tidak mementingkan diri sendiri menyebutkan, “Saya hanya ingin membantu tim saya membuat musik yang indah.”
